Ground Breaking and a Worthy Successor !!
Introductory Video –
In Canon EOS line up “5D” series always is setting up new benchmark interms of Image quality and evolution of advanced technology in full frame DSLRs. And Here is yet another success story – Canon’s brand new 5D Mark IV, 30.4 MP Full Frame DSLR.
Yesterday was the global launch except India and today it is officially announced and launched in India in an special event at Delhi and Kochi. There was so much of wait and anticipation for this and it was going on since ages. One of the most important reason was the popularity of the 5D series in the Indian Market.
While designing Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon has addressed to queries, issues, wish list from photographers who were using 5D mark iii and 5Dsr. Thats what was my 1st impression by just looking at the specification – Its made with a lot of thought process behind it.
Being a Canon Photo Mentor, I was one of the very very few lucky heads to lay my hands on this state of art device much in advance before the official launch. I Spent good time with the new dslr and also discussed some brilliant new technology with canon’s technical experts.

1. New 30.4MP Full Frame Sensor with Digic 6+ Processor.
2. Dual Pixel CMOS AF.
3. 61 Point AF System (Same as 1dx Mk ii ) with 41 Cross type AF points. AF Points cover more expanded region on the sensor now. (Like 1dx Mark II)
4. Centre AF Point is sensitive to -3 EV.
5. AI Servo iii Module and Continuous Servo AF for stills in Live View. (Something which is not there even in 1dx Mark ii)
6. 7 fps continuous shooting speed.
8. ISO 100 to 32000 max.
9. 150,000 RGB+IR metering Sensor.
10. Dual Pixel RAW (Ground Breaking)
11. Built-in Wifi/NFC and GPS.
12. DCI 4k 30/24p Video, Motion JPEG, 4k Frame grab.

Lets Jump straight on to a camera –
Look and Feel
Canon 5d mk iv is made with a lot of though process behind it, right from the physical appearance to the the technology used and features added.
It looks much like the older 5d mk iii with more solid grip and weather sealing. Few tweaks with the button layout at the back and now the cable release port move to the front. With all this Canon has engineered to make this much lighter than old 5d mk iii. It has adopted the best from 7d Mk ii, 5dsr and old 5d mk iii interms of design and the result is outstanding built quality. Its dust proof and splash proof when it comes to weather sealing.
Notice a new Thumb button just below the joystick is Completely customisable to use various function on the go, typically is used to change AF area. (Very useful in practical shooting as you dont have to take your eye away from viewfinder to change some parameters.) Canon 5d Mark IV also has the Intelligent Viewfinder II with overlay display which shows more shooting information right in the viewfinder. Viewfinder coverage is 100%.
The appearance and over all size nearly matches the old 5d mk iii. This is the main consideration canon has done while designing the successor just to keep it completely back compatible with lot of other gear like Video rigs which 5d mk iii users must have already invested in. So 5d mk iv just fits in the existing ecosystem as is.
Let’s see what all New Features it packs –
1. Autofocus and AF Points –
No need to mention very fast and accurate Autofocus. New AF Module same as 1dx Mark ii having 61 points spread across the wider area (24% wider) than the last generation. 41 Cross Type AF points. 20 points sensitive upto F4. It takes same AI Servo Module from 1dx Mark II and all the AF customisation. Now you can also set AI servo tracking speed for Videos. So All in all Canon 5d Mark IV offers a very high degree of AF customisations. It supports full AF compatibility (all AF points available) at a maximum aperture of f/8, “for high-precision autofocus even when using EF super-telephoto lenses with an EF extender.”
2. Intelligent Viewfinder (like 1dx Mark II)
3. Dual Pixel CMOS AF – Reliability Redefined.
Its all about AF from Live View and in Video. Coming from 70D which was the 1st generation of dual pixel CMOS, which the whole photographic community had accepted as the most reliable AF system fro video has just become even better in 5d mark iv. While i was testing a quick video with AF on Flexi zone, Not even once the focus shifted to the wrong place.
With AF mode on face tracking, it not only track the faces but even any subjects amazingly well. I tested both coming in to the camera and going away from the camera scenarios quickly with the amazing results. Undoubtedly this will set the new standard for AF in Video shooting in DSLR.
And to add a beauty to this, there is a touch screen for focus racking and smooth focus transitions. Life is better.
In Addition to the video functionality, 5d mk iv can also shoot stills continuously at 4.3 fps with AF tracking enabled in LIve View.. (Something which is implemented for the 1st time in full frame DSLRs which even 1dx mark ii lacks)
4. Dual Pixel RAW – Ground Breaking.
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV can save a double size RAW image which then will allow you to shift focus in the post using Canon’S DPP. It uses full advantage of Dual Pixel CMOS design to record different prespective information from left and right side pixels which alllows us to precisely select or change the focus area in the image. It is same as doing a AF micro adjustment but in post 🙂 . Thought there will be reduction in continuous shooting speed with dual pixel raw mode enabled.
Imagine you shot something very critical but just missed the focus due to various on-field conditions. Now you have the solution. Ground Breaking …!! isn’t it ?

5. Bokeh Shift –
Another advantage of above technology is that you can even slightly shift the bokeh in the image in the post processing. Mind you this not a gimmick or a manipulation this is purely a technology at the next level and using the Raw information from the Dual Pixel Raw file.
6. Ghosting reduction –
Ghosting is purely a lens fault now you will ask me how camera can correct it ? Consider this, Dual Pixel RAW, 2 full size RAW files, One is recorded by only right side pixels .. and another only from left side pixels .. Now you all will agree that Ghosting or lens flare changes as you move your camera from left to right .. the angle of flares changes and at one extreme side angle the effect will be minimum .. Now the same is acheived by Dual Pixel RAW as you have lens flare information from left and right side … so you can reduce it to substantial margin. Life is better ? … Definitely much better 🙂
7. DLO – Digital Lens Optimization.
Another wonderful feature, where majority of lens flaws and distortions are corrected right inside the camera, which includes all majority of flaws like, abberation, color shift, Pin cushion, Diffraction and many more. This actually works which yield the highest possible image quality in terms of resolution and sharpness of the lens you are using. DLO is applicable only for Canon Lenses.
8. New Sensor with High Dynamic Range –
As canon has bridged a long gap since 7D mkii and 80d , the new Canon sensors are with a more dynamic range as high as 13.5 ev which is more than the older generation of 5d mk iii which was only 11.9.
9. Noise Floor and High ISO.
The Design which canon adapted that uses on-chip analog to-digital conversion, resulting in lower downstream read noise and therefore less shadow noise and better overall dynamic range at lower ISOs. The Noise floor is well below at the base ISO so noise in the shadows in no more an issue. I quickly shot one underexposed shot at ISO 100 and then tried pushing the shadows in the post, result was way cleaner and without any noise. Though there is a decent increase in the resolution, Canon’s new sensor looks much cleaner at high ISOs. Just like 1dx Mark ii Canon engineers are able to achieve the great amount of fine details even at highe ISOs. ISO 10000 image was having some noise but the mount of details it had was phenomenal.
10. Video –
There are plenty of new features which will excite the 4k shooters. 4k 30p/24p in dci and motion jpeg gives you amazing quality of video with amazing colors. Even if there are no color grading options, video taken at flat profile and with feature of HDR video gives you much more dynamic range. in 4k it records from 1.6x crop area which is even better for those who need reach. It can shoot upto 1080 60fps and 720p at 100fps. Tried a slowmotion which looked amazing even for 720p. HDMI out supports up to 2k recording with external monitors. Built in Timelapse movie option.
11. New Mirror vibration reduction mechanism –
This is every important specially when you deal with more number of pixels. to get the sharpest result one needs to also consider the slightest possible vibrations coming from the mirror mechanism. Just like Canon 5dsr, the new Mirror assembly dampens the effects of vibrations.
12. 7fps continuous shooting speed –
With 7fps shooting speed and buffer of 21 raw files, makes it a great camera even for action photography. With AI servo module same as 1dx Mark II combined with 7fps is a great deal to wildlife and sports shooter. While using Dual Pixel RAW mode, Continuous shooting mode decreases. Also Frames per second decreases to about 4.3 fps when you shoot from live view in Subject tracking AF.
13. Remotely controlling through a smart phone or tablet –
One of the newly addd feature will allow you to now start and stop videos from Canon’s Camera Connect app from Android and IPhone app from Smart phones and Tablets.
14. New High Resolution Sensor –
Resolution of 30MP is decent enough to resolve the fine details of your subject with high resolution glass. Though its no as high as Canon 5dsr but proves to be the decent trade off when it comes to Resolution Vs Speed Vs Noise Performance at High ISO.
15. New 150,000 RGB+IR Metering Sensor –
This makes sure that you get perfectly exposed images in even tricky light conditions. The data from this metering sensor is also used for Canon’s new iTR feature which helps the AF system to track the subject by their color and distance information.
With all this new technology,
5D Mark iv is made to address the needs of photographers of various genres including Nature& Wildlife, landscapes, portrait, wedding, fashion, product etc.
So all in all 5D Mark IV has set the new standards in terms of technology and image quality. The amount of feature upgrades put in by the canon makes it a very solid and worthy successor in the trend setter 5D series.
For 5D mark III users looking for a upgrade and not able to spend more for 1dx mark ii, you have now a very strong option as Canon 5D Mark IV which carries major feature set from 1dx mark ii in a smaller and affordable package.
For current APS-C users looking for upgrading to full frame, 5D Mark IV is the ultimate option where they will see a tremendous improvement in quality of shooting and quality of images.
